As a graduate of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the question of how to choose a career in this field in Nigeria is one that I often ask myself. The hospitality and tourism industry is full of endless potential and offers numerous career paths, from managing a 5-star hotel to becoming a tour planner and operator, to name a few. However, the reality is that Nigeria is a country whose main source of GDP is crude oil products, and the private sector's efforts are often neglected. Additionally, the industry's growth potential is yet to be fully realized in Nigeria. In my senior year in University back in 2016, I believed it would be easy to break into the industry, and many of my colleagues shared the same sentiment. Hospitality and Tourism are terms that we all know; the former referring to the friendly reception and entertainment of guests and visitors, while the latter is the act of traveling for pleasure. In Nigeria, however, the potential of this industry has yet to be fully realized. While it is a multi-billion dollar industry that is doing well globally, Nigeria is missing out on the benefits of this lucrative sector. Developed countries now focus more on tourism as a means of creating opportunities for foreign investment, which is crucial for the growth of their economy. As a graduate of Hospitality and Tourism Management, I am thrilled to utilize this platform to educate the public on the numerous issues and prospects available within the industry. This platform is not limited to Hospitality and Tourism Management graduates and undergraduates, as it is open to anyone who has an interest in the industry, including lecturers and enthusiasts.
